12/15/2005Banda Aceh, Indonesia: 1 year after the tsunamiOn December 26, 2004, a tsunami devastated the province of North Sumatra, particularly the city of Banda Aceh, not far from a Lafarge cement plant. The Group immediately mobilized resources to provide emergency care, as well as financial and social assistance for survivors. Lafarge then turned to long-term projects to assist local communities and confirmed its plans to rebuild the Banda Aceh plant.

In 2005, Lafarge and the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), the international organization for the protection of the natural environment, announced the renewal of their partnership in 2005. This collaboration focuses on the reduction of CO2 emissions, the rehabilitation of quarries and the implementation of 8 key environmental performance indicators.

Sustainable construction applies across the complete lifecycle of a building, from the choice of initial materials, to demolition and recycling. The challenge is to build, but in a different way. Since 2000, Lafarge and the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) have been cooperating both locally and internationally. They are working together to counter climate change and preserve biodiversity. The 2 partners have defined 8 performance indicators, the results of which are published yearly. The indicators are as follows: environmental audits of sites, quarry rehabilitation plans, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, energy and raw materials, waste production, energy recycling and dust discharge.

06/07/2004Reduction of CO2 emissions in Morocco
Lafarge Maroc, the largest cement manufacturer in Morocco, inaugurated a new plant in Tétouan. 40% of the plant's electricity comes from renewable sources, thanks to a wind farm located near the plant. This initiative, a world first, significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and has been recognized by the UN as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
