Benchmarking & reporting

Lafarge's sustainable development indicators are analyzed and certified by independent ratings organizations. The goal is to improve reporting methods and provide increasingly reliable and transparent information to all stakeholders.

Reporting: reliable data

In 2004, Lafarge implemented a common reference system for environmental reporting (Group Environment Reporting). It was updated in 2005.

A specific reference system for the Cement Business (Business System Reference) complements the Group reference system with indicators which only concern the Cement Business (CO2 emissions, dust, etc.).

This system follows the principles of the Global Reporting Initiative and seeks to improve the Group's transparency with regard to sustainable development.

Independent auditors’ report

Ernst&Young, an independent auditor, examines the Group's social and environmental indicators, including those for CO2 and dust emissions, the number of female top executives and employee shareholdings. Read the independent auditors' conclusions regarding Lafarge's performance in these areas.

Performance

Multiple indicators
Performance is not just about economics. It also takes account of:

  • the environmental impact of the Group's activities,
  • quarry rehabilitation capabilities,
  • the quality of relations with stakeholders,
  • product quality,
  • customer satisfaction,
  • work conditions,
  • all other social and environmental criteria.

Other benchmarks and reports

  • Lafarge signed the United Nations Global Compact in 1999. The Global Compact is intended to extend the benefits of globalization to the entire planet.
  • The ISO 14001 standard: since 1996, this standard has been used to certify environmental practices and Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Lafarge's goal is to obtain ISO 14001 certification for all of its sites.

Sustainable construction

The Group’s partnerships

The challenges of sustainable construction concern all players in the building sector. Lafarge works closely with industrial associations, energy suppliers and architects to identify building methods which are cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
