Local performances

The Group applies in practice on a daily basis its sustainable development values. This commitment was recognized in 2010 by various independent organizations and professional associations.

A major player in sustainability

Committing to employee health and safety, constructing sustainably, preserving the environment, supporting local stakeholders, etc. All these values are promoted daily by the actions and work of employees who place sustainable development at the heart of the Group's strategy.

In 2010, 19 business units were recognized for their practical commitment to themes as diverse as:

  • environment,
  • corporate social responsibility,
  • health and safety.
  • innovation,
  • sustainable construction, etc.

 

Performance

Multiple indicators
Performance is not just about economics. It also takes account of:

  • the environmental impact of the Group's activities,
  • quarry rehabilitation capabilities,
  • the quality of relations with stakeholders,
  • product quality,
  • customer satisfaction,
  • work conditions,
  • all other social and environmental criteria.

Prizes awarded to the Cement Business

Industrial ecology and climate change

 To fight climate change, Lafarge has committed to reduce the environmental impact of its activities. This approach has a direct effect on manufacturing processes:

  • reducing energy consumption,
  • using alternative fuels or raw materials,
  • using industrial waste in the cement manufacturing process, etc.

 The winning countries are:

  • Brazil for its advertising campaign on CO2 targets met and exceeded.
  • The United Kingdom for its social, environmental, marketing and customer initiatives.
  • Greece for its Health & Safety initiatives at workplace.
  • Honduras for its corporate social responsibility actions.
  • Kenya for its environmental, social, partnership and economic development initiatives.
  • Korea for the rehabilitation of its quarries and environmental preservation.
  • North America for the excellence of its performance and its environmental initiatives, as well as for its innovations in terms of alternative fuels.
  • The Philippines awarded by WWF for its environmental leadership.
  • Poland for the quality of its products, from production to distribution via packaging.
  • Romania for reducing the environmental impact of its Hoghiz plant, for helping victims of the 2010 summer floods, as well as for its corporate social responsibility actions.
  • Spain named "Best place to work".
  • Ukraine for its Health and Safety initiatives.

 
Focus on: the Philippines, which have teamed up with WWF to establish local initiatives to fight climate change. The country has affirmed its commitment to protecting the planet and, in the context of its partnership, will analyze the environmental impact of blended cement.

Prizes awarded to the Concrete & Aggregates Business

The winning countries are :

  • Brazil for its water preservation initiatives.
  • Western Canada for its Edmonton's Anthony Henday Drive project.
  • France for its environmental practices (protection of biodiversity and resources, environmental respect, etc.) and for its partnership initiatives among local communities.
  • The Philippines for exemplary management of its Health & Safety and environment programs.
  • The United Kingdom for its Health & Safety initiatives, for the rehabilitation of the Alrewas and Dry Rigg quarries, for its sustainable approach to product delivery and for its actions in the field of sustainable construction.
  • The United States for its community initiatives in the state of Georgia, for its contributions to the wildlife habitat conservation and preservation in the west of the country (award granted by Wildlife Habitat Council), and for its actions in the sustainable construction field.

 

Focus on: Brazil, which succeeded in reducing its water consumption by 81 million liters in 2010 as a result of exemplary control over water management at its sites.

Biodiversity

Lafarge operates 730 quarries around the world. Their rehabilitation is a priority for the Group. In 2009, 79% of the Group's quarries benefited from a rehabilitation plan established according to the methodology defined with the WWF. The aim is to preserve the animal and plant resources present in these natural environments.

Prizes awarded to the Gypsum Business

Water management

Water management is one of Lafarge's main concerns. The Group has committed with WWF to implement a water management program on its sites in order to develop a better understanding of its water consumption to better reduce it.

Australia was awarded for:

  • its Safety program,
  • its stormwater harvesting system at the Matraville plant.
