Local performances

The Group applies in practice on a daily basis its sustainable development values. This commitment was recognized in 2009 by various independent organizations and charities.

A major player in sustainability

In 2009, 19 business units were recognized for their practical commitment to themes as diverse as:

  • innovation,
  • sustainable construction,
  • environment (biodiversity, climate change, water management, waste management, etc.),
  • stakeholder relations,
  • workplace health and safety,
  • employee development, etc.

Performance

Multiple indicators
Performance is not just about economics. It also takes account of:

  • the environmental impact of the Group's activities,
  • quarry rehabilitation capabilities,
  • the quality of relations with stakeholders,
  • product quality,
  • customer satisfaction,
  • work conditions,
  • all other social and environmental criteria.

Prizes awarded to the Cement Business

Case study

Lafarge Shui On has in China developed a wide range of training suitable for all its employees. The initiative has been recognized by human resources professionals.

The winning countries are:

  • the UK, particularly the Cauldon and Hope cement plants,
  • Lafarge Shui On in China awarded for its range of training,
  • France for 2 sustainable housing projects,
  • Lafarge Heracles in Greece,
  • Lafarge Bamburi Cement in Kenya for its environmental practices,
  • Jordan for its efforts in the field of Health & Safety,
  • Moldova for the promotion of the Lafarge brand.


An example is Greece, which was recognized by the University of the Aegean and the national environmental policy and strategy center for the methodology used to assess its economic, environmental and social performance.

Prizes awarded to the Concrete & Aggregates Business

The winning countries are:

  • Canada, particularly the Berrymoor mine and the Western region,
  • the Aggregates Business in the United States, in particular for rehabilitation of Golden quarry,
  • the Bitumen Business in the United States, in particular for 5 plants in northern Colorado,
  • France, with 10 quarries awarded for their work to promote biodiversity,
  • Spain, for rehabilitation of the Haymsa quarry,
  • the UK, in particular for the Alrewas quarry, the Charing Sand mine and Whittlingham County Park,
  • the Aggregates Business in the Philippines, for management of its quarries and the fact it had "zero lost time incident".


An example is the Philippines, where the BU also received the Special Prize for support provided to local communities following Typhoon Ondoy.

Biodiversity

Lafarge operates more than 800 quarries around the world. Their rehabilitation is a priority for the Group. At the end of 2008, 79% of the Group's quarries benefited from a rehabilitation plan established according to the methodology defined with the WWF. The aim is to preserve the animal and plant ressources present in these natural environments.

Prizes awarded to the Gypsum Business

The winning countries are:

  • Australia and its Altona plant for its operational performance,
  • South-Korea for its environmental work,
  • the United States, named the "best company to work for",
  • Romania.


An example is Romania which received an innovation prize for its "Cinema partition" project using recycled materials.
