Management

Sustainable development is an integral part of performance management at Lafarge.

A dedicated organization

The Sustainable Development and Public Affairs department works to encourage progress in the area of sustainable development:

  • the team of 11 people brings together Group executives and the environment managers from each Business. This guarantees continuity between decisions made at headquarters and actions in the field,
  • positions dedicated to climate change and sustainable construction were introduced.

The Group's Executive Committee supervises the department and approves its policies and objectives. Each year, the Executive Committee spends a day working with the stakeholder panel.

Sustainable development committee

To formulate and implement policies

This committee meets at least twice a year. It was created to improve the way sustainable development is integrated into day-to-day practices.

The Director of Sustainable Development and Public Affairs chairs this committee. The operational directors of each Business participate, along with the Directors of the Research & Development, Social Policies and Communication departments.

Sustainable development objectives for managers

Sustainable development objectives form part of each manager's personal objectives. The results achieved are evaluated during an annual interview. The manager's bonus is calculated in part on the basis of these sustainable development results.

  • Environmental targets: an Environmental Management System (E.M.S.) is in force at every industrial site. This system has allowed Lafarge to be listed in the FTSE4GOOD ethical stock market index.

  • Social targets: a Health and Safety Management System has been established at every operational site. The level of application is regularly audited.

The Advance program

Measuring overall performance

The Advance program was launched in the Cement Business in 2003. It aims to improve all economic aspects of the Business' activities, including sustainable development.

Sustainable construction

The Group’s partnerships

The challenges of sustainable construction concern all players in the building sector. Lafarge works closely with industrial associations, energy suppliers and architects to identify building methods which are cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
