Multilocal initiatives & partnerships

Lafarge is both a local actor and a global player. Local, because its products are manufactured where they will be used, to ensure they are perfectly adapted to the requirements of local markets. Global, because the success of the Group's long-term development ambitions depends on the mobilization of all of its employees.

To reconcile these 2 approaches, the Group relies on the Lafarge Way, encourages dynamic action and establishes both international and local partnerships. The objective is to share our know-how and experience across borders.

Creating a community based on values

Each of our employees shares the values of humanism and sustainable development defined by the Group. The Lafarge Way is designed to:

  • define common rules which apply to everyone,
  • develop the skills of every person,
  • encourage a spirit of initiative,
  • motivate teams.

The Lafarge Way leverages a variety of practices, tools and shared key performance indicators to achieve these goals.

Encouraging local dynamism

Lafarge's operations are local because the raw materials are extracted locally and the products, which are bulky and difficult to transport over long distances, are manufactured on-site.

To ensure its products are always perfectly suited to the needs of local markets, Lafarge:

  • encourages local initiative through effective delegation of responsibilities,
  • shares its experience and best practices,
  • encourages dialog between local teams and Business Unit managers.

Establishing international and local partnerships

Lafarge works closely with local populations to promote environmental, economic and social development around its sites.

The Group acts at 2 different levels:

  • at a global level, Lafarge develops partnerships to exchange opinions and expertise, establish a framework of projects and improve the Group's performance. Lafarge has partnerships with:
    • the W.W.F. (World Wide Fund for Nature) for environmental and biodiversity protection,
    • Habitat for Humanity, to construct housing for low-income populations,
    • Care, an organization involved in the fight against H.I.V./Aids.

  • at a local level, the Group initiates programs with local N.G.Os. (nongovernmental organizations) and implements practical solutions to meet the needs of communities, for example by financing dispensaries in Indonesia or India, an anti-malaria program in Malawi, or computer literacy courses for young women in India.

Lafarge seeks to intensify local economic development and participate in community activities wherever it operates.

The W.W.F.

The World Wide Fund for Nature

The W.W.F. is the world's leading organization for the protection of nature. Its aim is to stop the degradation of the planet. The W.W.F. has an operational network in almost 100 countries. Its philosophy is based on dialog and it works to achieve worldwide consensus on the implementation of concrete, sustainable solutions.

The W.W.F. has a genuine desire to involve all concerned parties: local communities, businesses, governments and international and nongovernmental organizations.

Sustainable construction

The Group’s partnerships

The challenges of sustainable construction concern all players in the building sector. Lafarge works closely with industrial associations, energy suppliers and architects to identify building methods which are cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
