Our local partnerships
Wildlife Habitat Council, Habitat 4 Humanity, Room to Read ... These are just some examples of associations and NGOs with whom we are working locally on a range of sustainability issues. We encourage our country units to sign partnerships with local NGOs and associations to work with them on topics such as affordable housing, education, nature conservation, health or local job creation. It is indeed at grassroots level that many of our projects prove to be the most effective.
For example, Lafarge Zambia, together with the Ministry of Education and the association Room to Read, has contributed to the building and equipping of over 60 libraries since 2008, benefiting over 210,000 children.
In North America, we work closely with the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) at a number of our industrial sites, as part of our ongoing program to protect and promote biodiversity. For example, we have worked with WHC to develop a pollinator garden at our Alpena, USA cement plant. This has enhanced the habitat for pollinator and other species in the city's industrial corridor, improved neighborhood esthetics and helped to raise awareness on the importance of pollinators among plant employees and the local community.
