Lafarge Roofing: 50 Years of Quality and Modern Design with Braas

08.13.2003

On August 13th, 2003, Lafarge Roofing commemorates the 50th birthday of Braas, the leading brand for roofing materials and systems. The roofing materials of Lafarge are marketed under this product brand in Germany, Poland, Switzerland and Turkey.

The success story started in Germany with a business idea as ingenious as it was simple. In August, 1953 Rudolf H. Braas founded his company to meet the needs of his day. In light of the urgent call for building materials in post-war Germany, the entrepreneur introduced a process to manufacture concrete roof tiles by machine, reacting to the strong demand for high-quality and low-cost roofing.

In the following decades the company expanded its position into many European countries. The takeover of Braas by Lafarge in 1997 resulted in further internationalization. Together with Lafarge Roofing, the building materials unit, the leading building materials manufac-turer expanded the roofing system business around the world and is now active in some 40 countries. The tile “Frankfurter Pfanne” is worldwide the most successful model. It is successfully manufactured and sold by Lafarge Roofing in 27 countries around the world. The goal of present development efforts is to simplify and accelerate building projects by providing customers with complete solutions and services.

Lafarge Roofing is the roofing systems division of the Lafarge Group. With more than 200 production sites in 38 countries on 4 continents, Lafarge Roofing is the leading global supplier of pitched-roofing products, roof system components and chimney systems. In 2001, Lafarge Roofing employed more than 12,600 people, generating sales of EUR 1.5bn.

Lafarge is world leader in construction materials, holding top-ranking positions in each of its four divisions: Cement, Aggregates & Concrete, Roofing and Gypsum. In 2002, the Group recorded sales of 14.6 billion euros. Lafarge currently employs 77,000 people and operates in 75 countries.
