Third report on sustainable development:
A progress report evaluating the group's performance.

Lafarge's third sustainability report focuses this year on an evaluation of the group's performance, measuring the progress that has been made toward the numerous aspects of sustainable development: social progress, respect for the environment, and the economic impact of business.

In keeping with its long-term commitment to responsible development, Lafarge is striving to align economic performance with sustainable development while strengthening the dialogue with the Group's stakeholders. This is manifest in the creation of a permanent stakeholders panel in 2003, which was involved in the preparation of this report.

This ambitious strategy produced the following results in 2003:
- The Group strengthened its ties with civil society by deepening partnerships with:

  • CARE, and as a member of the Global Business Coalition, in the fight against AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, a policy that will soon be extended to Asia,
  • Habitat for Humanity, with projects in twelve countries to provide housing for the homeless,
  • WWF in environmental protection. This partnership has led to a net reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, down 11.8% per tonne of cement since 1990, as the group continues to work toward its goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 20% by 2010.

- Lafarge signed the UN Global Compact as part of its commitment to promote human rights in its sphere of influence.

Performance monitoring focused on three key themes:
- Social responsibility: development of social indicators in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative, particularly concerning collective agreements, safety, health, employment and diversity, as well as the fight against AIDS,
- Environmental responsibility: notably by reducing air emissions and favouring sustainable construction
- Economic responsibility: illustrated by the formulation of a Code of Business Conduct.

With the publication of this report, Bernard Kasriel, Lafarge's Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Sustainable Development Committee, made the following comments:

“Progress on the road to sustainable development is like a marathon run, above all for Lafarge. Even if your performance needs to be evaluated as you run, the important thing is to go the distance. Evaluating our performance is the scope of this third report, which describes the progress made this year on the many dimensions of sustainable development. I am convinced that by rising to meet the challenges of the modern world in partnership with our stakeholders, the group will continue to make lasting progress toward building a better world.”
