France: restoring the Palais des Papes, a UNESCO world heritage site

12/20/2011

The 15,000m² Palais des Papes, constructed in the 14th century, is the largest Medieval construction in Europe. Listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site, the "Popes' Palace" is now one of the most visited historic buildings in France, with some 650,000 visitors a year. Its renovation calls for experts in their fields and the use of traditional materials fitting their demanding needs.

Lafarge NATHURAL™ 100% natural white lime was selected for the renovation of the Palais des Papes' Tour de Trouillas, carried out by the city of Avignon. Pure and cement-free, supple, consistent and permeable to water vapor, it is being used for the jointing, the screed and the patina of the stones, as well as to restore the bulding's original appearance and height.
