AMBITIONS 2020

We set ambitious targets to reduce emissions as part of our environmental stewardship and responsibility towards the communities surrounding our operations.

We have been contributing to the fight against climate change for many years and one of our major ambitions for 2020 is to achieve a 33% reduction in our CO2 emissions per ton of cement. In order to meet this ambitious objective, we are improving kiln energy efficiency; increasing our use of alternative fuels such as biomass; and continuing to reduce the clinker intensity of our cements, developing blended cements for a range of different applications.


In addition, we are investing in research and development to:

  • Industrialize lower-carbon Aether® cements, which offer similar performance to conventional cement, while allowing a 25-30% reduction in CO2 emissions;
  • Perfect more energy-efficient processes;
  • Optimize the composition of concrete and improve recycling.


Through our Ambitions 2020 program we have also committed to further reducing our emissions of NOx and SO2 and dust. Finally, we are introducing new programs to reduce the level of noise emitted by our plants, improve the visual impact of our operations, and set specific reduction targets related to mercury and the control of dioxin/furans.

The Alpena Wet Gas Scrubber was commissioned in December of 2013. As a result the 2014 SO2 emissions in the related kilns have been reduced by over 90%.

AMBITIONS   OBJECTIVES IN FIGURES
CONTINUE OUR PROGRAM OF REDUCING CO2 EMISSIONS  
  • Reduce by 33% our CO2 emissions per ton of cement compared to 1990 levels (equivalent to a 14.4% reduction from 2010 levels).
CONTINUE OUR PROGRAM OF REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT AS SET OUT IN THE AMBITIONS 2012 PLAN  
  • 50% reduction in dust emissions per ton of clinker compared to 2010 levels, with no kilns emitting more than 50 mg/Nm³
  • 25% reduction in NOx emissions per ton of clinker compared to 2010 levels.
  • 30% reduction in SO2 emissions per ton of clinker compared to 2010 levels.
ADDRESS LOCAL CONCERNS  
  • 100% of cement operations having assessed ground level visual impact and, in conjunction with stakeholders, developed a landscape plan.
  • 100% of cement operations having a nighttime noise at closest external residence to plant of <55 dB.
  • 30% reduction in mercury emissions per ton of clinker compared to 2010 levels.

  • For any plant with emissions greater than 50 pg/m³, implement a plan for control and reduction.
