Canada - “See Something? Do Something!” health & safety contest

Canada

Lafarge West Canada decided to involve all employees in a Health & Safety contest to find a mantra that would influence behavior and help reduce the number of potentially dangerous incidents.

Objectives

  • Simplify the Health & Safety messages to employees and contractors;
  • Empower workforce to take action in a risky situation;
  • Reinforce Lafarge's H&S culture;
  • Involve everyone in submitting mantra ideas.

Summary

Lafarge West Canada launched a Health & Safety contest among all its employees to find a ‘mantra.' The aim was to develop a simple, impactful message that would resonate with all employees and sub-contractors, influence behavior and help reduce the number of potentially dangerous incidents.

In itself, the contest helped to strengthen the internal Health & Safety culture, with some 400 ideas submitted. Finally, the winning mantra 'See Something? Do Something!' was selected. Suggested by a front-line worker at a Lafarge plant, the slogan brought instant credibility to the initiative among those employees who are potentially at most risk.

The slogan has since become everyday vocabulary at all levels within Lafarge West Canada, from plant workers to senior management. The slogan empowers every employee to take action in a potentially dangerous situation and anyone who sees something of risk is today expected to do something about it.
